Autographs
Back in the good old days we use to hang out in the players parking lot after games and get all the autographs we wanted. I'm talking 1980's, we got Nolan and any Astro we wanted and hang out at the vistors bus and get a few of them every night. I think with card shows and all the inserts in card packs it's hard to get players to sign at the stadium the way they use to. Sad

Baseball Card Shop
After collecting for a few years I found myself without a job one day. The construction boom had finally slowed down. Since I had been spending all my free time and all my money in the card shops I decided I could do this. Open my own card shop, why not. People spend big bucks in these places and what could be more fun. Talking baseball and sorting through cards all day, what a life. This is how I meet my best friend Ralph. Ralph is a good ole southern preacher, and was a pretty good highschool third baseman, so he says. He sure must have been a lot slimmer then than he is now, ha. We have spent many many hours in the card shop and shows living our second childhood. You should see his office at the church, looks like a card shop. Lots of really nice items, some even came from my store.

Card Shows
We went to that Card Show, it was in the DoomSkellar in the bottom of the Astrodome. When I walked through that door I had no idea there could possibly be that many cards in the world. This was a very small room compared to the convention centers they use for card shows these days. Probably not more than 15 dealers at the show. At this time I still didn't know that people really did this for a living, selling and buying baseball cards, what a life.
Being the packrat that I am I started buying and collecting any thing to do with sports, especially baseball. I even found a few card shops in Houston. Not good for me, I spent all my off time and all my money at the shops. Larry D. loved to see me drive up on Saturday morning.
Sure didn't know I would feed myself for years on baseball cards.

Baseball cards
Did anybody ever collect basaeball cards? I did in the late 1950's and 1960's. Back in the very early 1980's the little kid that lived across the street from me started buying packs of cards at the little store around the corner. I would play at little catch with him most afternoons and he showed me his cards one day. Boy did this start something. I found all my old cards and we had a blast looking at the Mantle, Yogi, Williams and all the rest. This got me real excited about buying cards with him and putting together our sets. And that's what we did the rest of that summer.
One day he asks if I will take him to the card show he saw advertized in the paper, I ask "What is a card show?"

meet the packrat
I COLLECT. I have never thrown away anything in my life. I still have rocks, marbles, books, records, and many more other things from the last 50 plus years. I do remember throwing away a closet full of comics when I came home from the service, mother said she had not touched that room for 4 years but the day had come to clean up. Probably should have kept them.
Oh well live and learn.
